An Invitation to Imagine
Through my work, I offer an invitation to imagine.
By allowing our imagination to reach a little further, we can discover new perspectives within familiar scenes.
I hope that encountering my work encourages people to notice things they may previously have overlooked.

ABOUT
Kazumasa Izuno

I see the world through the Buddhist perspective of dependent arising, and find beauty through this way of seeing.
Dependent arising is the understanding that nothing exists independently: all things and phenomena depend on a range of causes and conditions.
These interconnections bring about outcomes we welcome, as well as those we would rather avoid. Yet when I step back from human concerns and take a broader view of how things are interconnected, I sense in each thing something that might be called a manifestation of life. I find beauty in the way it exists.
This way of seeing begins with an interest in how something exists, here and now. From what is before me, my imagination expands. Connections emerge, revealing the relationships that make it what it is.
With an awareness of these relationships, I look again at what is before me. Even familiar things reveal a manifestation of life, deepening my attention to their presence, here and now.
Through the forms, colours, and textures of my vessels, I seek to spark the imagination of those who use them. In serving food, arranging flowers, and using a vessel in everyday life, something previously overlooked may suddenly catch the eye. From there, imagination can reach towards the relationships that make it what it is, allowing it to be seen anew.
Through the experience of using my vessels, I hope people will sense life and a vast, unfolding drama in even the most familiar things. My ideal is to create vessels that make such experiences possible.

WORKS

Sculptures
Sculptures inspired by human and animal figures.
I pay particular attention to the impressions created by their gaze, posture, and balance.
Some works stand on their own. Others consist of multiple figures, with the relationships that emerge between them forming part of the work.

Mitate Vessels — Familiar Forms Reimagined
This series reinterprets the forms of familiar objects as vessels.
Starting with objects such as mortars, baskets, boat planks, and boxes, I draw out their defining characteristics rather than simply reproduce their shapes.
I transform them into ceramic vessels, considering their intended use, scale, and the possibilities of the material.

Vessels of Contrast
This series brings Gama, the original technique I developed for tea bowls, into everyday tableware.
Conceived to be completed through the addition of food, these vessels draw on contrasts between vessel and food: light and dark, vivid and muted colours, dry and moist textures, and impressions of weight and lightness.
I make them with attention to how these relationships can bring out the qualities of both the vessel and what it holds.

Mamezara — Small Plates
Small dishes in a variety of forms, designed for the enjoyment of combining and arranging them for seasonal occasions.
Users choose their own combinations to suit the season and the food, allowing individual stories to emerge.

Tea Bowls
Building on the experience gained under my teacher, I developed Gama, an original technique for tea bowls.
Through this inherited experience and a new technique, I continue to explore the possibilities of the contemporary tea bowl.

Kumi-hanaire — Composed Flower Vessels
These works combine multiple objects, treating the entire space as a vessel for flowers.
Forms, flowers, placement, and the surrounding space come together to create a single scene, extending beyond the act of placing flowers in one vessel.
I approach the space itself, transformed through different combinations and arrangements, as a flower vessel.
